'de/fault' - oil paint and biro on paper

So fully are these works expressive of a natural life force, that one seems to be peering through a microscope at patterns of bacteria, spontaneously organising, or tracking the drift of protein strands, or counting the layers of history in an ice-core, in the striations in a cliff face, or the rings of a felled tree. It is captivating, and at first, indefinable.
And then, dancing with the bacilli, and tangled in the kelp fronds, are bare, man-made marks in biro; wiry, almost awkwardly insubstantial in comparison. Yet they reveal the truth of each gesture; capricious cat scratches, jerking free-jazz rhythms, transcendental repetitions and barbed conversations; all musical and urgently alive.

Those marks are pressed through the paper, into a thick bed of oil paint, and so, become intensified, encrusted by mineral weight and slow grease. A dialogue between swift action and laden consequence unfolds, and refolds.

Thomas Gosebruch was born in 1951, in Munich, Germany and now lives and works in London. He studied Painting at HFBK, Hamburg (1976-79), an MA in Printmaking at HFBK Braunschweig (1981), Painting at The Royal College of Art (1984-85) and a Ceramics Diploma at City Lit (1999-2001).
He has recently shown in group exhibitions at Galerie Florian Sundheimer, Munich (with Thomas Bechinger, 2016) and the Museum of Xi’an Academy of Fine Art, China (British Contemporary Drawing, 2015 ).
His work is held in the collections of The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum and several German museums.

Review of States of Mind, States of Consciousness exhibition at the Welcome Trust.

LONDON — This exhibition explores the range of experiences, which emerge, from the edges of our consciousness. As the accompanying leaflet states, ‘If we try to pin down the exact nature of consciousness, it becomes problematic.’ The changing show of artefacts, installation and film footage is subdivided into categories, such as Science and SoulLanguage and memory and Being and not Being. This immediately suggests that the science may not be perfect or at least conclusive, and the artistic elements may or may not be either produced by artists or indeed take the form of conventional artworks...Full Article at GalleryEll

year 2 student Emiko is exhibiting in this exhibition

My recent artwork ReShape the Past: Stranger on Bicycle has been selected for it.
Private View is on Thursday 4th February so I will have to miss our class. I hope our classmates and other art students especially who are disabled or interested in Shape Arts could visit, also it held at Yinka Shonibare's studio space.

This is an interesting organisation and particularly recommended for those interested in disability and equality.

Tutor profile Tony Hull

Tony Hull studied at Chelsea School of Art before completing his MA at the Slade. He is an exhibiting artist working principally as a painter, and drawing forms a significant part of his art practice. His current output explores sites of extreme socialization like youth rallies and mass gymnastic displays, and his work is in UK, European and US private collections. He has a studio in North London.

Tony’s teaching methods relate to his interest in the way visual perception functions and how meaning is formed, particularly in relation to artistic process. He is excited by collaboration and the cross-disciplinary opportunities for drawing and has run drawing workshops for Electronic Arts and Microsoft, mainly in the US and China. He is currently writing a book on the relationship between drawing and visual perception.

invitation to the Discerning Eye EXHIBITION FROM ex- student Alison Lumb

‘The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artist, two collectors and two critics. Work is selected from open submission and with works by artists invited by the individual selectors. Each section is hung separately to give each its own distinctive identity. The impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole. It provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally-recognised names.’

So that is exciting.   I would love to invite you all to a private view, but unfortunately, due to the large number of artists involved, we only get a couple of guest tickets for the Artists’ PV.

However, entry to the show is free, so if you find yourself in the area, do drop in. The dates are 12th-22nd November and they are open every day.
